Executive message:
The Indian economy has fared well in the first half of the year. Despite some upheaval in the market the overall sentiment is positive. Thanks to India's impressive macroeconomic performance, the International Monetary Fund has projected that the economy will grow by 9.7% in 2010 and 8.4% in the next fiscal, driven largely by robust industrial production.

In line with the growth sentiment in the country, H1, 2010 ended on a positive note for NEC India as well. With the IT division registering a growth of 66 % at the end H1, 2010, the strategy to re-invent, re discover, re-think the approach to “Go to Market” seems to be bearing fruit.  The objective was to re-align and strengthen our partner ecosystem whilst developing a clear segmentation and targeted approach towards our customers. The company also piloted certain cloud based initiatives around Retail and the SME segment.

NEC India hopes to scale newer heights and go to market as a stronger entity.

  • India's potentially vast IT market appears to be positioned for a strong recovery in 2010 thanks to an improving economy: Stronger growth in enterprise spending is expected in 2010, and government procurement should also grow robustly, along with opportunities in healthcare, education, telecoms and financial services.
  • According to latest figures from Indian IT association Nasscom, India's technology and business services revenues accounted for 6.1% of GDP in 2010, up from 1.2% in 1998. This was despite the fact that earlier Nasscom had downgraded its growth projections for the domestic IT sector as a result of the global economic crisis. IT and business process outsourcing (BPO) exports grew only 5.5% in 2010, due mainly to IT budget cutbacks by clients in Western countries.

Software:

  • The Indian software market should continue to record healthy growth, with software spending CAGR for 2010-2014 projected at 16%. In H1,2010, vendors reported that enterprise IT spending was trending upwards, with stronger demand for technology from the small and medium-sized enterprise (SME) segment.

Services:

  • India's IT services market is estimated at around US$6.2bn in 2010 and is projected to grow to US$13.6bn in 2014.

E- readiness / Internet uptake:

  • Broadband subscriber numbers have consistently fallen behind target in India. The main reason for the slow uptake is thought to be insufficient demand, although the government has taken some measures to reduce tariffs and encourage alternative forms of service provision

Unified Communication:

  • With industries across major verticals deploying UC applications, the Indian market has started extensively adopting Unified Communications (UC). The total market size of UC in India was approximately USD 670 mn in 2008, which is likely to grow to over USD 1 bn by 2010.
  • Early adopters of the technology have been experiencing various benefits such as significant RoI, enhanced customer service and productivity. Verticals like IT/ITeS, BFSI and manufacturing are witnessing large-scale adoption of the technology in India.

Retail:

  • With POS systems aggressively being adapted by various industries such as Retail, Hospitality, Finance, Transport, etc. Also, new technologies (such as display, storage, hard disks, operation platform, etc) are being continuously incorporated into the various components of POS system. In addition, the market is also witnessing an increased preference for portable and wireless POS systems. Further, the ability of POS systems to help companies make more informed business decisions, increase inventory shrinkage, and decrease theft, wastage and employee misuse are the advantages because of which companies and organizations are adopting POS.

Healthcare:

  • Secondary Care Hospitals: Unleashing the new  potential in smaller towns
  • Driving the growth of India's healthcare sector will be the expansion of the hospital, pharmacy, biotechnology and health insurance segments.
  • Healthcare expenditure in India is expected to increase by 15 per cent per annum.
  • This segment is expected to constitute 6.1 per cent of the country's GDP and employ around nine million people in 2012 .

Education:

  • The moderate increase in elementary education funding — from Rs 26,800 crore to Rs 31,036 crore — is a step in the right direction and will ensure that Sarva Shiksha Abhiyan (SSA) is well funded to become the main vehicle for implementation of Right to Education (RTE) Act. This will encourage not just technology adoption but also take the benefits of technology to the grass root level.

Hospitality:

  • The year 2010 is a different story as the consumer is well educated, travelled, experienced and looks beyond the gloss of the brand to the value proposition and the actual delivery of brand promises.
  • While hoteliers want to improve their guest experience, they are constantly striving to reduce the total cost of ownership. With the influx of technology and sophisticated solutions, conventional sources of earning revenue have dwindled. With the intention of increasing revenue the hotels are looking at offering a bouquet of value added services like movie on demand, music downloads, interactive games which will entice the guest and also add revenue.
